June 2026 Newsletter
Skyland Neighbors, let's share a moment of grief for our yards, trees, and gardens after today's hail. May your plants and trees recover, and may your losses be minimal. Hope no one suffered any property damage. That was wild!
In better news, have you been to the newly opened Effin's Bottle Shop on 28th at Madison yet? They opened in mid-May, and have wine, spirits, beer, artisanal cheeses, ice cream, coffee, and more! Effin's is operated by the same folks opening The Corner on Madison soon!
We are celebrating 225 subscribers to our Registered Neighborhood Organization (RNO) for Skyland, average about 30 monthly meeting attendees, and 4 of us serve on the Near NE Area Plan Advisory Committee! It has been rewarding connecting with neighbors and there are numerous efforts in progress with opportunities to engage.
At our May community meeting, we were joined by Denver Water to provide information about water restrictions being imposed due to drought, and relevant resources. We've provided that info and links in this issue.
On June 9th, we'll be joined by Bryan Botello, Senior City Planner, to re-engage with Skyland on the Near Northeast Area Neighborhood Planning Initiative (NPI). Would you like to see more tree canopy, connected sidewalks, traffic calming measures and safer pedestrian crossing, more flexible zoning districts for walkable businesses and entertainment, more green space, community space and resources in Skyland? Can you think of things that the city could do to ensure more equitable resources and access for Skyland residents and businesses? Bring your ideas and your enthusiasm to create a 20-year plan for Skyland.
We have two neighbor-hosted garden tours this month and we can't wait to see you at SkylandPalooza on Saturday, June 27th. This is the most exciting neighborhood event of the year! Skyland Neighbors and the Near Northeast Area Neighborhood Plan will both have booths at this big block party, hosted by Ephemeral Rotating Taproom. Also, heads up, we are planning to do a mini-bike parade from Effin's Bottle Shop on 28th (at Madison) down 28th to SkylandPalooza (at Columbine). Meet up at Effin's and enjoy a tasting around 1pm, then kick off the community ride at 1:45pm, to arrive as SkylandPalooza kicks off at 2pm!
July and August brings weekly Skyland Neighbors roving Trash Parties (5pm) and Happy Hour (6pm) at Ephemeral on Thursdays. Stay tuned for more details, and look for a Skyland Neighbors flyer on your door in the coming weeks as our volunteers canvas the neighborhood.
We're organizing future sessions to hear from city officials about the Sidewalk Implementation Plan, Unlocking Housing Choices, and Colorado Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). We're also hoping to highlight neighborhood history and provide renter-to-homeowner information. If you have suggestions for discussion leadership and/or community organization, please reach out. Help us advocate for Skyland by attending and voicing your concerns. Our meetings are open to residents (whether you own or rent) and the public. We welcome your feedback about topics or guests you'd like to learn from in the future.
